Remark for Ex. 2

* sb1 +wish + sb2 + would + verb = can be used to express dissatisfaction with the present and a wish for change in the future. If sb2 is animate [ a person ] , the action is in the subject’s control and the idea of willingness / unwillingness is still present. But in our case, sb2 is inanimate [ a thing = a letter ] , so here it is like the phrase “I would like” [ but “I would like” is not restricted to actions where change is possible and does not imply dissatisfaction with the present situation ]. So the best way to render the idea is the one expressed above, see 2.1.

Remarks for Ex. 3:

3.4. * arrives – present form with future meaning if the verb in the main clause had been in the present [ we go ] // but * arrived – past simple form with future meaning because the main clause verb is in the past [ we went ] – which makes “arrives” become “arrived”.

3.5. * This complex sentence contains two clauses: Clause no. 1 – a Main Clause = His best friens … is a lawyer. Clause no. 2 – a Relative Clause [ a non-defining relative clause ] = … who lives in London. // The only relative pronouns used in non-defining relative clauses are: 1. WHO – for persons; and 2. WHICH – for things. // So, relative pronoun THAT – is not used in a non-defining relative clause. [ relative clause = propozitie subordonata atributiva ].
